This schematic shows the Atmel ATmega8515 minimal circuit. The ATmega8515 is using an external crystal. The circuit applies to the ATmega162 as well. The ATmega8515 is basically an ATmega162 with half of everything removed and replaced by an external memory interface. If you use the external memory interface you give up 19 I/O lines. For that you get up to 64,928 bytes of external storage. Do not confuse it with the ATmega8535 - they are not similar.
